Somehow on my PC (yeah, I still use a PC at home a little) I got a nasty virus or something that kept popping open web browser windows in both IE and Firefox. I ran anti-virus and Ad-Aware but that didn't help. Finally, what helped is Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool. Amazing! It took a while to run but it took care of things.
Maybe this will help someone else.
