More people get injured skiing and snowboarding when crashing into each other than crashing into trees or poles. There was a snowboard death in Wisconsin this week, so here's an article for snowboarders to quickly look over - I've listed my favorites but please read the whole article:
How to Avoid Crashing Into Others While Snowboarding
- When approaching the bottom of the mountain, watch for congestion where runs converge
- Keep an eye out for struggling beginners, and give them a wide margin of error when passing them.
- Stop before you enter the lift line and detach your bindings. Don't try to get out of your binding while you're riding into the lift line.
For skiers, I always try to mention something when I teach classes... give snowboarders a lot of room. They sometimes have to turn sideways / across the hill, so you can't just fly past them like I see some skiers do (which is very dangerous anyway). I'm also a snowboarder and skiers need to also share the hill with them. Can't we all just get along? :-)
The speed you get when skiing or snowboarding can be dangerous. It's not nerdy to wear a helmet, it's smart. People die doing snowsports. Stay in control and do not bomb the hill - especially if you're in the beginner area. A lot of accidents happen there. People there may not know how to turn and stop really well. Use your brain.
Be safe out there and have fun!
-Tony
