Burger King Marketing Shady

I've commented before about how I think Burger King's commercials are a bit disturbing. They've run commercials where people are pretty much murdering each other, a guy hitting the people in the car in front of him in the drive thru and another guy diving out of his car where his car hits who knows what:

So to add to this chronicle, the latest questionable marketing by Burger King is where they had people get rid of as many friends as they could on Facebook for a free burger. Get rid of your friends for a burger.

Burger King Cancels Facebook Ad Campaign

...Burger King Holdings Inc., known for its advertising antics, has been encouraging on Facebook, asking members of the social-networking site to “de-friend” 10 others in exchange for a free Whopper.

...

The campaign, which featured tag lines such as “Friendship is strong, but the Whopper is stronger,” grew rapidly on the site, as thousands of members jilted each other for burgers.

...

"Whopper Sacrifice” was created by Burger King’s agency, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, owned by MDC Partners, and Refresh Partners, and follows several provocative campaigns for the No. 2 burger brand. In December,

So what does it mean that BK is turning to such depravity? Are they doing so badly that they've allowed a marketing agency to talk them into getting them any kind of attention even if it's bad attention? Is this a last ditch effort to get some publicity? Are they at the end of their rope with nothing left to give but their integrity?

They encourage people to ditch friendship, assault with a vehicle and even murder. Frankly, I don't want to buy a burger from that kind of place, but maybe that's just me.
