I've heard a lot about this lately and have tried it myself and it works. Just cut soda (or as we in the Midwest say "pop") out of your diet and you can lose weight. I've been drinking more water (cold bottled spring water - which local politicians seem to be against because plastic bottles are "bad for the environment" - whine, whine, whine) and I've been exercising 5-6 times a week and along with watching other food that I eat, I'm losing weight. Just say no to soda pop!
Check this out:
Why Soft Drinks Contribute to Obesity
To summarize, the rise in obesity rates with increasing HFCS consumption was no coincidence. The increased popularity of soft drinks and HFCS-sweetened convenience foods led to a rapid increase in fructose consumption. It was this excessive fructose intake that fuelled the rapid weight gain, since fructose does not generate the same satiety signals as glucose. It is likely that sweetened drinks are worse than sweet solid foods, and that sucrose has the same effect as high fructose corn syrup.
So what are the alternatives?
- Well, it seems that brewing tea / making iced tea and adding just some (not too much) of your own, real sugar is better than this high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). It's more natural and your body knows what to do with it.
- And then there's water, which you can never go wrong with.
- I have my Starbucks Grande Soy Latte every morning, so 1-2 cups of coffee ain't too bad (although you hear every month that either coffee is good or bad for you - mostly good though).
- Have an apple. An apple a day...
Just get off the Mountain Dew, people! You'll be healthier, have better digestive health and feel better. Just don't go cold turkey - if you have 2 a day, go down to 1 for a week, then 1 every other day, etc. Your body is used to it and you have to slowly get off it - just make sure you have a plan and stick to it.
