I went to Best Buy yesterday and did more research and got more information from a friendly sales person. The Samsung LN-T4065F that I was interested in is last year's model. The new models were updated in May. The new model of that TV is the Samsung LN-40A550 (which is called the "5 Series"). It's still a 1080p unit but the contrast ratio has been bumped up to 30,000:1. In the words of Christopher Walken... "Wow!" Honestly, I looked hard at the TVs with the 15,000:1 contrast ratio and the 30,000:1 contrast ratio and you could really hardly tell the difference. There was even a Panasonic HDTV there with a 1,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, which must be just some marketing hoo-haa, I suspect. And it seems that Best Buy does actually get the same model number as everyone else - at least on these. I know it used to be where they'd get different model numbers of some items than maybe Circuit City.
I really like the looks of this TV. It does have that sort of
glossy frame around it, which seems like maybe one of those trendy
things that goes away in 2 years so that if you have a TV that is like
that, you'll then look old and outdated. For now it looks cool though.
There's also a sort of blue power light in the middle, underneath it
that's cool as well. The swivel stand looks sturdy. C|Net gives it a 8.7 out of 10.
It's got a nice selection of inputs. I can hook my laptop up to it if I
want to. The USB port could be kind of fun - you can apparently plug
things like your digital camera into it to show some pictures. And the
picture is amazing, of course. Watching sports on this thing will be
fun... help, someone pry me off of the couch!
So now that I've decided, it's a pricing game. The lowest I'm seeing so far for this Samsung LN-40A550 is
$1,269. Best Buy had it for $1,349 at the store. I do get Rewards Club
points and there would not be shipping, so that might be the best bet
for me. Again, geting it next month is the plan - we'll see. I'm a tech
geek, so this would be fun for me. -T
