AT&T Tethering Fail
Written by Tony
Tuesday, 17 August 2010

So, with the iPhone 4, you can finally do tethering, which is where you can jump back to 2005 and use your cell phone's Internet connection with your laptop. Yeah, I had this feature with my old Motorola phone way back when.

I called the other day to get it set up and was pretty well shocked at what was presented to me.

To enable tethering for my iPhone, I had to change data plans. Any AT&T iPhone user is already used to this annoyance that comes with each new iteration of the iPhone, so no big surprise so far.

The data plan I was on was called the "Unlimited" plan and to enable tethering, I'd have to go to a plan that is limited to 2 GB of data transfer per month. Also, I can NEVER change it back. And to switch to this will cost an extra $15 per month.

The lady on the phone asked me if I wanted to go ahead and it seemed like, since she has to tell people about this plan, that she knew exactly what my reaction should be. I said something like, "Ok, so to do tethering, I have to switch from unlimited to a limited plan AND pay $15 per month? No, that's a terrible plan. I will not switch."

I mean, it was nothing against her at all. She was just doing her job and I told her that. I felt bad for her that her employer made her try to sell such a terrible plan. That would get a little depressing, I think.

Anyway, that's their "plan" and I do not "plan" on switching to it anytime soon. Sure, you can't offer unlimited Internet access - that would tear down their fragile network. That makes sense but to pay more and then never be able to switch from it again? What's up with that?

I think I can speak for about everyone in saying that if the iPhone goes to Verizon, we're in!

Check Card Rewards
Written by Tony

Ok, first off, I'm not being paid by Chase Bank to write this. These are just my own experiences.

Back in 2008, I moved my checking from Associated Bank to Chase Bank and that was a great decision. First, they gave me referral bonuses that totaled about $150 or so because I brought over a savings account and a business account. So I got that much just for switching (starting a new account) with them.

Second, they have this check card rewards program that's awesome. I used to get about $100 for 50,000 points but now you easily get twice that. I just cashed in something like 25,000 points and got $160. I use my check card all the time for things and try to pay online with it when I can, too. It's better than credit cards because you then don't rack up debt. So getting that didn't take too long. It's a nice bonus to give yourself.

I've now changed my check card rewards card over to a United mileage card instead because I'm doing more traveling and want to get free flights. On my last trip to Phoenix, it only cost me $85 for a last minute, round trip flight because I used 15,000 miles. That's awesome. I'll be able to fly anywhere I want for cheap. My India trips also help rack up miles.

I just wanted to tell everyone that if you do not have a checking account debit card that has a reward program, then what are you thinking? It's free money, people!

I was at Micheal's Frozen Custard a few weeks ago and they were doing an interview. I got a mention in it since I used to be a manager there - back in college. Check it out: In Business Magazine.
